Let’s go back in time for a sec. So, it’s summer and high school has been out for a few weeks. I’ve been busy putting off writing thank you letters for the graduation party I had, putting off starting that book I always wanted to write, and basically not accomplishing much worth noting until it was time for Orientation. I get to have a hectic day exploring my future college and then spend a night with some guy I don’t know in some random dorm. Yippee? Fast-forward a bit, after I get all my clothes wet at the showers and have a too-crunchy-bacon-and-stale-eggs breakfast, I get to choose my classes.
Now, up til this point, my knowledge of college classes was minimal. All I’d ever heard were fantasy stories of how college students got to leave classes their professors don’t show up to and how people could sleep in as long as they wanted since their classes started in the evening–all awesome sounding things for a guy used to waking up 6:18am every morning to go to about 7 hours of class with only small breaks between hallways or at lunch.
I also never had too much freedom up till this point for choosing classes. Throughout most of my 4 years of high school, I had to clear out those classes that were required by school and also take AP classes to make things easier (and hopefully cheaper) in college. It was really only my senior year I was pretty flexible with my independent study crazy shit going on.
So, of course, I go totally crazy with my schedule.
“Well, I was thinking either Japanese or Polish but I’m leaning towards Po-
What’s that?
No Beginning Polish this year?
Alright, Japanese it is! I don’t care if it’s 6 credits out of the 15 I plan to take and if Polish should be offered next year!
Whoah! I can take classes in the evening? Well then, Human Evolution on Tuesday nights for 3 hours til 9:30 sounds good to me!
Huh? A lab paired with that on Thursday nights too? Whatever.
What else should I take considering I’m undecided and have absolutely no clue what I’m doing….oh, I guess that Exploring Careers and Majors class thing that was talked about at every undecided event before this.
Also, I might as well try out Journalism 1001 since I’m kinda interested in Journalism type stuff.
There, done!
Wait, I have tons of gaps throughout my day where I can barely accomplish anything…
…
Fuck it; I’m not changing things now after all that careful deliberation. I’m hungry and I wanna go home.”
And that’s what happened.
Exactly.
Word-for-word.
Oh, I guess I was going to only go back in time for a sec. That took longer than I thought. We’re already in the present. Damn. Well, anyway, I haven’t registered for classes quite yet. I’m due to pick on Wednesday. Morning. At 10:10 am. Exactly 10:10 am. What.
Anyway, I spent quite a bit of time this time deciding how to make my schedule. I originally had grand visions of taking Digital Photography but apparently you either have to be the luckiest person on earth or a mighty senior to have any chance of making into stuff like that. I also had my big inner debate months ago about whether I should continue Japanese or not. It was swiftly decided that was a terrible idea and I’ll do Polish next year, when it’s next available (leading me to suffer through Japanese the rest of the semester). Well, that cleared up 6 credits right there. I originally did early scheduling for a Japanese-related Freshman Seminar, but I’m going to get rid of that now that I want nothing to do with Japanese basically. Me and Japanese no longer hang. I also signed up early for Psychology at like the worst time ever. So I’m gonna get rid of that shit too. Well then, there was my plan to take Astronomy since I always liked stars and black holes and all that and I had to clear a Physical Science course. However, I saw people holding their fists toward the moon(?) and generally seeming crazy so I decided I could do better than that. That leaves me with….nothing. Shit.
But no. I really do have a schedule thought out. I found Geology and Cinema for a Physical Science. I also found Sociology instead of Psychology. I’m also going to take a Fiction Writing class since that’s something that truly interests me a lot. Finally, I decided to take a Globalization class since it’s interesting enough, writing-intensive (gotta have those), and it nicely rounds out my credits to 15. However, I also had to narrow down all my choices for scheduling. With all of the different options available, I had like 250 possible schedules ahead of me. So, I had to sift through quite a few of those before finding a perfect one with many classes close together, but leaving time for eating while not putting anything too early since I am now somehow unable to wake up as early as I did less than a year ago.
Well, I’m done now, right? Classes are all figured out, right? Perfect schedule right? Well, this is assuming all of my classes don’t get screwed over by some slacker ship dips trying to take an easy class via the 3 remaining spots in the evening Fiction Writing class that I have a genuine interest in taking and really could enjoy. There are about 37 hours left for that to happen. For my dream schedule to crumble before my eyes. With no other options. Leaving me stranded to scramble and pick up the pieces as quickly as possible. Because of those schwip hips. Those freaking whip hicks ruin everything.
Or I could take Fiction Writing on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8:15am. But fuck that, that’s crazy early.
